"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the band?" a message reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There is only one problem: The sender also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're far from alone. A host of celebrated supporters have also petitioned for the role.

It's clear something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit trio. Their videos often depict them marching in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such boundless joy you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage people to form a group."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the fourth Haim sister."

Historic Recognition

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I watch the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The project emerged from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words detail endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to consciously practice ignoring the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent toughness called for a fresh approach – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's openness inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

But the band will consistently be their primary commitment.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still making music."
