As any major honors show nears, you'll find an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
